Daily Helping:
Week 09 (February 26 - March 04):
During this 7 day period, consider the privilege involved with working in the teaching profession. It is true that teachers and administrators have a very stressful career-climate in which they are compelled to function. Don't forget that students also have a very stressful job and the overall sphere of educational experiences is a very serious and complex reality. Nevertheless, sucessful teachers are undoubtedly heroes and deserve a tremendous amount of respect when they are able to balance the demands of the profession with maintaining right relationships with students, parents and, most importantly, maintaining peace, joy and love within their own personal family relationships. The J.T.A.S.P. administration is clear on the principle that a career should never take the place or choke out the most essential aspects of personal family life and time. If a teacher is spending too much time planning lessons, grading papers and attending meetings, at the expense of his/her family, then we think such a teacher needs to make a serious decision in terms of whether or not they can adjust how they are managing their time at work and whether or not they need to choose to serve children in another capacity, taking into account the precious commodity of time which has been stolen from their family members who deserve the first-fruits of its intended purpose and benefit. Assuming that a teacher/administrator has found a healthy balance within the education profession, we suggest that he/she ought to make a list of all the reasons for which they are thankful to be proactively and intentionally working in the lives of students. Also, it is good for educators (including mothers who have the privilege of home-schooling) to ask the following: What have I specifically set forth in my classroom management policies which cultivates an environment of showing appreciation for the dignity of each and every one of my students? What do I need to do so that my on-task-time with students produces a greater joy in the classroom, higher academic achievement and a deeper sense of gratitude for all that being a teacher entails? Remember, there are too many distractions and obstacles that teachers face daily and, unless one is proactive and intentional, the teaching career can quickly steal the joy of serving children and the subsequent sense of deep satisfaction in knowing that equiping our youth helps to shape the future of society by impacting the lives of students who will be leaders tomorrow.
